Tax vacancies increase following transparency pressures

Tax vacancies rose by 11% in London and the south east during Q1 of 2016, compared to the same period last year.

INCREASED SCRUTINY on businesses over tax transparency has caused an increase in the number of firms hiring tax professionals, a recruitment consultancy has found.

According to recruitment firm Robert Walters, intense public and media criticism following HMRC’s £130m deal with Google and the recent Panama Papers scandal has contributed to a rise in tax vacancies in the first three months of 2016, 8% higher than the same time last year.

There has been even greater demand for tax professionals in London and the south east, with the regions reporting an 11% increase. With politicians questioning the legitimacy of tax efficient strategies dominating headlines, legislators and regulatory bodies are being forced to prioritise the issue.

In consequence, tax professionals are likely to see demand for their skills remain high for the foreseeable future.

Rob Mckay, manager for tax recruitment at Robert Walters comments: “Employers are coming to recognise the pivotal role tax professionals can play in maintaining the reputation and integrity of a brand.

“In light of several major firms recently being hit with heavy fines over tax practices, businesses are making it a high priority to attract and retain highly skilled tax professionals who can ensure that they are compliant with regulations.”
